Executives, Decision-Makers, and Colleagues,
Every one of us experiences emotions.
Some days we are excited. Some days anxious. Some days frustrated. Sometimes fearful. Sometimes overconfident. That is human nature.
The question is not whether these emotions exist. The question is: who is regulating them?
I learned something from the CEO of a very successful company. Every morning, before the day begins, he spends fifteen minutes in quiet reflection.
Not thinking about business. Not thinking about numbers. Thinking about himself.
He asks simple questions. Yesterday, where was I frustrated? Where was I anxious? Was I intimidated? Was I overconfident? Was there something I could not solve?
Then he looks ahead. What is coming today? What may create pressure? What will give me energy? What will give me satisfaction?
This is how self-awareness is built.
Confidence is internal, not external. Science tells us fear, anxiety, excitement, and confidence all change the chemistry of the body.
When you become aware of your emotions every day, you begin to regulate them. Slowly, you become calmer. More stable. More confident.
Not because someone praised you. Not because of a promotion. But because you understand yourself better.
For years, people have been told to work harder. Hard work has a place, but excessive hard work does not help.
It takes away clarity. It reduces balance. It drains judgment.
The better question is: given the same time, how do I do better work?
That means focus on what matters. Learn continuously. Talk to people who think differently. Set clearer priorities. Reduce fragmentation of attention.
That is what working smarter really means.
Start with five minutes. If possible, go to fifteen. Do it every morning.
Over time it compounds. You lose less energy to emotion. You become less reactive.
When someone challenges you, you pause. You think. Then you respond.
That is confidence.
And remember: you are the master of regulating your own psychology. Practice it daily. It will stay with you for life.
Best,
Ram Charan
